A Feb. 8, 2005 Morocco Times article by Ahmed El Amraoui entitled "Abbas and Sharon declare mutual halt of violence" reports the following:

"A quartet Mid-East summit, comprising leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Israel, concluded in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm Al Shaikh today, with both Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister declaring an end of four years of violence and hoping for a new era of peace in the Middle East.

In separate statements that followed the summit, Abbas proclaimed a formal end to Palestinian armed attacks on Israelis. In return, Sharon declared a halt to all military action against the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

'We have agreed with the prime minister to cease all acts of violence against Israelis and against Palestinians wherever they are,' Abbas said in his statement.

Sharon confirmed the agreement saying: 'Israel will cease its military operations against the Palestinians in all areas.'

Sharon also confirmed that Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and said he would discuss further releases with the Palestinians."
